Yerevan café culture: a field guide
The pink city runs on soorj — thick Armenian coffee — long conversations, and apricot everything. Here is where to sit, sip and stay.

Yerevan is older than Rome and looks younger than Berlin. Its real public institution is the café: half the city’s decisions are made over a copper pot of soorj.
Start on Cascade’s steps at golden hour, espresso in hand, Ararat on the horizon. Move to the courtyards around Saryan street — the wine bars pour Areni by the glass and nobody hurries you.
Our shortlist
- Morning: a classic soorj with gata pastry near the Opera.
- Afternoon: iced apricot tea in a Kond courtyard, the oldest district in town.
- Evening: Areni noir and jazz — Yerevan has live music seven nights a week.
The rule is simple: sit down, slow down, and let the waiter decide at least once.
