Tatev: a monastery on the edge of the world

The road to Tatev used to take a whole day of hairpin bends. Today the Wings of Tatev cable car crosses the Vorotan gorge in twelve minutes — 5.7 kilometres of silence, with eagles turning below you.

The monastery itself was once one of the most important universities of the medieval world. Monks here copied manuscripts, taught philosophy and music, and built the Gavazan, a swaying pillar that warned of earthquakes and approaching armies.

How to visit

  • Go early: the first cabin leaves at 10:00 and the light on the gorge is best before noon.
  • Combine it with lunch in Halidzor village — the trout comes from the river below.
  • Stay for the blue hour: when the day-trippers leave, the courtyard goes quiet and the stones turn gold.

If you only see one monastery in Armenia, make it this one — then see five more anyway.
