General information (for Italian citizens)
October 26, 2026
This page answers the practical questions Italian travellers ask us most often. Rules change: always double-check on Viaggiare Sicuri before departure.
Do I need a visa?
No. Since January 2013 Italian citizens enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days within a 12-month period.
Which documents do I need?
A passport — the Italian identity card is NOT accepted, not even the electronic one. Carry a passport with at least 6 months of residual validity and two free pages.
Is there an Italian embassy?
Yes, in Yerevan (Italy was the first EU country to open one). Keep its contacts handy and register your trip on dovesiamonelmondo.it.
Health and insurance
There is no reciprocity with the Italian SSN: medical care is paid. Take out travel insurance with medical coverage and repatriation. Pharmacies in Yerevan are well stocked; bring specific medications from home.
Money
The currency is the dram (AMD). Cards are accepted almost everywhere in cities; keep cash for villages and markets. Exchange offices are everywhere and honest — compare a couple of rates.
Phone and internet
No EU roaming: it is expensive. Buy a local SIM/eSIM (Ucom, Viva-MTS, Team) at the airport — a few euros for generous data.
Electricity, water, time zone
Sockets are type C/F at 230V like in Italy — no adapter needed. Tap water is excellent (drink from the pulpulak fountains!). Time zone UTC+4: +3 hours vs Italy in winter, +2 in summer.
Is it safe?
Yerevan and the tourist areas are very safe. Avoid the immediate border areas with Azerbaijan and check Viaggiare Sicuri for current advisories.
Language
Armenian; Russian is widely spoken, English common among the young in Yerevan. Churches: dress modestly (covered shoulders).
Driving
Italian licence accepted for short stays, but an international driving permit is recommended. Mountain roads: allow more time than the map suggests.
