The language of Mashtots

Armenian is a branch of its own on the Indo-European tree: it resembles none of its neighbours, and its speakers guard it like a family treasure. Its alphabet was created in 405 AD by the monk Mesrop Mashtots — 36 letters designed to capture every sound of the language (39 today, three were added in medieval times), essentially unchanged for sixteen centuries. The first sentence ever written in Armenian was a verse from Proverbs: “To know wisdom and instruction” — a cultural manifesto if there ever was one.

Mashtots is a national hero: the great statue in front of Yerevan's Matenadaran, the manuscript library, is him — and Armenians still celebrate the Holy Translators' feast. What you hear on the street is Eastern Armenian; the diaspora mostly speaks Western, same script, different pronunciation.

Eastern Armenian, as spoken in Armenia. Pronunciation tips: kh is like Spanish j, zh like French j, gh is a French guttural r, ts/dz as written. Stress almost always falls on the last syllable.
