Wine roads of Areni

Three days in the world’s oldest wine country: the 6,100-year-old Areni-1 cave, family cellars, and Noravank’s red cliffs.

Wine roads of Areni

Overview

Archaeologists found the world’s oldest known winery in a cave above the Areni gorge — people have been making wine here for sixty-one centuries, and it tastes like it.

We visit family cellars, not factories; taste Areni noir where it was born, sleep among the vines, and end each evening under more stars than you have seen in years.

Itinerary

  1. Areni village — the Areni-1 cave, first cellar visits, dinner with the winemaker’s family.
  2. Noravank & Yeghegnadzor — red-cliff monastery, cheese and wine pairing, village supper.
  3. Khor Virap — morning light on Ararat across the vineyards, slow ride back to Yerevan.
